Dan Trachtenberg, director of the upcoming Uncharted film, has revealed why he isn’t telling the video game’s story from the popular Sony PlayStation franchise.

Spider-Man: Far From Home star Tom Holland is set to headline the Sony film as Nathan Drake in an all-new story that would take place before the events of the video game series. This news had hardcore fans nervous about the new and younger direction. However, Trachtenberg has now addressed those concerns and gives some good reasons for the creative decisions thus far.

While speaking to GameRadar, the 10 Cloverfield Lane director discussed his goal for the video game adaptation and why he isn’t planning on directly adapting the source material.

“[I] have been approached with different versions of this tale,” he says, “and have always been not that interested in it because I didn’t really want to trace the game. I didn’t really feel like it was at all worthy of making a video game adaptation, [if[ we’re just gonna copy what the game is and just serve people a lesser experience than what they’ve experienced in such an incredible way.”

If it wasn’t evident before, it’s clear now that he cares about this property a lot and wants to tell a story worth bringing to the big screen. Not wanting to copy/paste the source material but rather create something new yet faithful may be risky, but the payoff could be worth it. Trachtenberg further added, “if Naughty Dog so chose to make another Uncharted game featuring Nate and Sully… this movie’s story is probably the story that they would want to tell.”

The acclaimed filmmaker joined the project earlier this year after Free Guy director Shawn Levy bailed on the project. Uncharted would not be his first experience with video games, however. He created the “Portal: No Escape” fan-made film, as well as the recently released cinematic intro for the free-to-play game Warframe.

Trachtenberg is set to direct from a screenplay by Jonathan Rosenberg and Mark Walker, with Tom Holland in the titular role.

Uncharted is set to hit theaters on December 18, 2020.
