The movie industry has already gone through something similar, with streaming platforms like Netflix and Hulu — to name only but a few — completely dominating the industry that once belonged, almost strictly, to video stores. This has made people wonder if there’s any future for consoles after all.
During a recent Q&A with shareholders, Shigeru Miyamoto shared his thoughts on Cloud gaming as a whole; revealing that he believes consoles and physical media will still be around once streaming video games becomes more widespread.
“I think that cloud gaming will become more widespread in the future, but I have no doubt that there will continue to be games that are fun because they are running locally and not on the cloud. We believe it is important to continue to use these diverse technical environments to make unique entertainment that could only have been made by Nintendo.“
While Miyamoto doesn’t rule out embracing cloud gaming, he’s still confident that players will still want Nintendo products in the form of consoles and video games themselves. Nintendo has always been on the side of innovation but they usually set trends rather than following them.
Cloud gaming is still relatively new, and Nintendo — at least for now — will still keep providing players with consoles and physical media; something that long-time fans of The Big N will definitely appreciate.
